MECHANICAL ENGINEER – AURAM PRESS DEVELOPMENT (JOB)

Job description:

The Auroville Earth Institute is providing manual presses worldwide called Auram Press 3000 through the workshop Aureka to produce CSEB (Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks). But there is and increasing demand for motorized systems, as labor is increasingly expensive in any country. We are currently developing a hydraulic press to facilitate the pressing of the blocks.

  • Develop the press prototype and finalize it. It is currently working but some modifications are needed.
  • Be the coordinator between Aureka (the workshop) and AVEI
  • Run tests and write reports
  • Work on the drawings (currently in AuroCAD)
  • If possible, make a 3-D Model of the press
Many other projects requiring mechanical skills also have to be developed: a motorized mixer, a shed, formworks for rammed earth, etc.

Skills and Experience Needed:

  • At least 2 years of experience as a mechanical engineer
  • Experience in R&D
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently towards deadlines
  • Advanced knowledge in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Fluent English writing & speaking
  • Communicative
  • Proficient in AutoCAD

STRUCTURAL ENGINEER (JOB)

Job description

  • Become familiar with earth building technologies (CSEB, SRE, composite elements) and associated architectures including arches, vaults and domes.
  • Review the current body of knowledge, including published studies and test protocols, in order to determine practicable test methods that can be conducted here, with limited technical resource availability.
  • Conduct tests, write reports, make recommendations regarding safe load limits for various architectural elements.
  • Present papers at International Conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Skills and Experience Needed

  • Master or Ph.D. preferred
  • Five years experience as a structural engineer
  • Experience in R&D
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently towards deadlines
  • Fluency in English

R&D – Poured Earth Project (JOB/INTERNSHIP)

Job description

The aim of the study is to get a better knowledge of poured earth techniques to use it for our next construction project. Two students already worked on this project in 2011 and 3 walls were built.

  • Optimize proportions of soil, aggregates, cement to reach a known compressive strength (wet and dry) and to control shrinkage (avoiding cracks)
  • Test the resistance to compression and bending as well as resistance to seismic effects
  • Research the appropriate binder and additives (lime, fibers, plasticizers)
  • Work on the ideal composition of soil, control of shrinkage, quality control, hardening, behavior in tropical zones (high humidity, rain, heat).

Skills and Experience Needed

  • Student or graduated engineer with knowledge in different construction materials, in civil or material engineer department
  • Strong interest for experimental research
  • Fluent in English writing and speaking
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently towards deadlines
