Designing with CSEB
The Auroville Earth Institute is currently developing a new training course focused on designing with Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB). The course will cover a general overview of earthen architecture, with the guidelines, detailing, structural principles and cost estimation of CSEB buildings.
All the presentations and information given in that course will be different from the four other regular courses. No stability studies of arches, vaults and domes will be done, as this is taught in AVD Theory week. We will assume their stability if they are used in the design. No special study will be done for earthquake prone area, as there are too many details to see. (However, a special week for earthquake resistance can be organized upon request.)
On the third day, trainees will be organized in groups of 4 and given a sample project. Using AutoCAD, the design teams will prepare plans (with bond patterns), details, calculation, elevations and sections. The design teams will present their projects at the end of the week.
Classes will start at 9 AM and finish at 5.15 PM.
Eligibility: students, architects, civil engineers, professional/construction managers with design background in architecture and proficiency in AutoCAD.
A minimum of 10 trainees is required, with a maximum of 20 (this information may be subject to change later).
What to bring: Laptop with AutoCAD is compulsory.
Contents
The two first days are more theoretical with lectures, power point presentations and practical exercises.
The first day will focus on a general presentation of the Auroville Earth Institute and earthen architecture. General guidelines for earth buildings will be given, and detailing for CSEB buildings. On Tuesday we will detail structural principles and cost estimation of CSEB buildings. Two cases studies will also be given.
Design Studio - The three next days are scheduled as a personal work, with teacher´s oversight and feedback.
From Wednesday, trainees will be organized in groups of 4 and given a project to begin.During the following days, trainees will have 3 days to propose a design, plans (with bond patterns), details, calculation, elevations and sections. On Saturday morning, trainees will prepare a PowerPoint to present it on Saturday afternoon, to Mr. Satprem Maini and his team. Best projects will be elected.
